Civic knowledge and engagement in local politics is extremely low, especially among young people. In the 2016 presidential election, less than half of 18–24 year olds voted. This is in part due to a lack of emphasis on civics education in schools. Most states require a half-year of civics education to graduate high school but few build real practical skills for local problem-solving. The rate of turnout is even worse for local elections. On average throughout the US, only about 27% of eligible voters actually vote in typical municipal elections and that small portion of voters usually falls into certain categories. For example, people aged 65 and above are 7 times more likely to vote in local elections than those 34 and under. This skew in local election turnout means that local governments do not accurately represent the needs and wants of the communities they are meant to serve. Get Involved helps by giving Gen Z and Millennials the resources they need to feel more confident about getting involved in local politics. Through a printed guidebook, an animated infographic, a website, and Instagram filters, the viewer is given clear examples of how to be more involved and prompts them to do so.
